I found myself hooked within the first few pages of author Jon Kiln's "Mercenary" simply because the author has a very unique and immersive writing style. There’s plenty of vibrant, descriptive imagery used to describe the settings, characters, and scenes in a vivid, visually-rich way – yet the author seems to also make sure to avoid filler and ‘fluff’ which would otherwise cause the book to bog the average reader down with overwhelming and unnecessary detail. I suppose the old writing adage “Show, don’t TELL” applies here and I think that the author has written in a way that follows this advice throughout the majority of the read.I also really admire the character development, especially how the friendship between Ganry and the princess starts to grow as the story progresses. Even though the book is a fantasy type read, the protagonists give off a genuine sense of realism and their many flaws and strengths contrast with each other to create overall dynamic, and even at times relatable, characters. In summary, I enjoyed the read and it has given me a good first impression of author Jon Kiln. There were a few parts that I think could have benefited from some editing or elaboration, or even left out entirely, but I still consider “Mercenary” to have been a worthwhile read and also a smooth introduction to the series.

Mercenary Blade Asunder Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Jon Kiln James Patrick Cronin Audible Studios Books Reviews
“Mercenary” by Jon Kiln is an epic Fantasy novel that sweeps across the page in a fast paced adventure that finds a new world and home in the Kingdom of Palara.
Ganry is an experienced mercenary with a soft spot for his newest client, Princess Myriam. The well-loved daughter of a wise king, she finds herself on the run after a coup by her Uncle Leonidavus lands her family in prison. As luck would have it, her mentor had read the writing on the wall and knew what was coming, asking another to sleep in the Princess’s bed, allowing her time to escape into the night when the guards came. Now, guarded by Ganry, they are fleeing to her mother’s family – and an unknown future that adds up to the perfect kind of fantasy.
Ganry, like most mercenaries, is rough, hardnosed and a bit heartless. As Myriam gets to him, he finds himself helping the unfortunate souls they run across – something his gold seeking pockets would not have allowed before. Soon the duo is a group and the tale is begun.
This is the kind of Fantasy adventure all lovers of the genre will enjoy, with developed characters and well timed action, you’ll come back and visit these souls again and again.
Excellent character development and careful plot-making resulted in a story that holds together up to a climactic ending. Ganry is a big man with a special sword. When he took this job, he was a jaded soldier who spent the early part of his life fighting for an earlier king. Peace reigned with the second King and there was no longer official work and she Ganry took a job to escort a young girl home. It turned out that she is 15-year old Princess Myriam, whose father and mother were King and Queen but were abducted by the King's brother Harald and imprisoned. As Ganry escorted Myriam, they were attacked by soldiers of the Palara kingdom and it became clear that Harals had given orders to kill them. The story goes on from there. Other characters came into the picture. Some died. Others lived on to share the adventures.
From the opening scene of The Mercenary, I was drawn into this adventure-filled fantasy. The novel centers on Myriam, a princess on the run from her power-hungry, scheming uncle. We learn that in a plot to overtake the kingdom, the uncle, Duke Harald, has just arrested the royal family. Myriam narrowly escapes capture by foiling his plans and placing an imposter (a loyal handmaiden) in her sleeping chambers.
The story begins with Myriam and the mercenary hired to protect her, Ganry, traveling to Castle Locke, where they hope to find refuge with the princess’ grandmother. If she is captured, she faces certain death, or a life of despair being married to her uncle so that Myriam has no claim to the throne. Myriam swears to Ganry that she would die before ever being tethered to Harald.
Ganry is road weary, having seen the atrocities caused by men’s greed and cruelty. He is a great match for Myriam, who is a smart and determined optimist, always eager to help those in trouble. This is illustrated early on in the book with their meeting with Artas, a man Myriam recognizs as an ally of her father. Artas and others soon join them on their quest, rounding out the cast of interesting and delightful characters. Ganry can’t help becoming increasingly fond of Myriam and I enjoyed watching their relationship change and develop.
Jon Kiln does an excellent job unfolding the story line and propelling the reader through Ganry and Myriam’s journey. I particularly enjoyed the descriptions and attention to detail, which made me feel like I was really experiencing the adventure with the heroes.
The Mercenary is a great start to the Blade Asunder series and a solid choice for readers who devour fantasy and/or sword and sorcery novels. Highly recommended!
