As she has done since childhood, Sophie spends the summer with family friend Rory Ballantyne in his old stone longhouse in the heart of Celtic Brittany - a ravishingly beautiful region filled with ancient customs and steeped in the mystery and romance of Arthurian legend. But this year things are changed her family are involved with their own lives, so she stays there without them. At first she is troubled by tension and quarrels between Rory and his wife, but she is soon distracted by the arrival of gorgeous artist Jason Ryder. Sophie becomes increasingly drawn to Jason but she also realises that Rory is not the older brother figure she had thought him, but a fascinating and attractive man. Then a series of strange dreams opens her to the energies of the land there, forces that seem to want something from her. At eighteen, Sophie is no longer a child, and she sees the local area and people through different eyes. Gradually she realises that the energies she senses, along with her dreams, emanate from a holy spring dedicated to Sainte Nicole, a Christianisation of a Celtic deity whom locals refer to as the Lady. The spirit of the land is reaching out and Sophie’s quest to fathom its message brings her, through love and loss, to an understanding of herself that helps her cross the threshold into maturity and gives her the strength to follow her own truth.

I'm so glad that Amazon offers books for free on Kindle because I probably wouldn't have read this book (or heard about it) and I would have missed out on a charming story. Although this book is lighthearted, it caught up my emotions from the beginning and didn't let them go. The imagery was simply marvelous; it was graphic, vivid and very descriptive and really captured the atmosphere of Brittany. It was very easy to immerse myself in the story and relate to the characters who all seemed like real people to me. Everyone, even the minor characters, had well-defined and three-dimensional personalities and the dialogues were very natural and seemed authentic. The writing style was very smooth and flowed very easily throughout the book. There were a few editing mistakes (missed words were the most common) but they didn't hinder my pleasure in the story. I'll just say that I wouldn't have forgiven my sister if she had acted as overbearing and interfered in my life the way that Sophie's sister did! Overall, reading this book was a wonderful reading experience for me and I definitely recommend it.

The Sacred Marriage eBook Flick Merauld Elen Hawke Reviews

The Sacred Marriage is a simple and beautiful love story, charged with magic and mysticism. The prose throws the reader into the middle of a Breton summer, hot and full of smells and sounds, rich and enchanting. I want more.
I have been to Brittany a couple of times, long ago, and the author brought me right back there, to the places I once visited.
The descriptions are so eloquent, I could smell, see and feel the beautiful nature of Brittany again. The believe that in those places there is more than meets the eye.....
For a too short period of time I was taken on a journey. I loved the story. Well worth every penny, this book!!!
I love history, especially in cultures other than my own and including some romance adds to my enjoyment. This is an unusual setting and a different slant on reality that I have a growing awareness of and interest in. Well worth reading.
Nice setting for a fantasy story. Enjoyable romantic coming-of-age drama with fantastical elements. The protagonist's a bit irritating at times - v self-aware and analytical for a teenager, but later on typically self-absorbed and oblivious to others. Maybe that's true to life; it's been a while!
I snagged this book when it was still free. And having now read it, I'd gladly pay the money to get it.

Elen Hawke's writing style is ethereal, wispy, and yet carries a weight of the world behind the words. The story itself is a good read. I highly recommend this book!
I picked this up for free and it sat in my kindle library for a while because I wasn't sure about it. After reading this I wish I had read it a whole lot sooner. This is a wonderful romance story about a young woman who spends the summer with her familys friend who is 16 years older then her. During this visit she has dreams/visions and her life changes and her emotions are all over the place. She also comes to some realizations about herself and what she truly wants in life. I did find myself wanting to kick Sophie's sister for being nosy and Rory for being so stubborn. Elen Hawke did a wonderful job and the descriptions made you really feel like you were there experiencing the scenery and emotions that Sophie had. I would very much recommend this to someone who'd like a semi short romance read, if you're willing to pay the price, very much worth it.
The writing in this novel definitely reflects the author's training in art and photography. Her descriptions are so rich and well-drawn that you can see, hear, smell and feel what she is describing. You can feel the sun on your skin and the beetle that just landed on your arm, and you know just what is like to slip into the lake for a swim in the warm water.

I loved the story and the ties to Druidism, Paganism and earth magic. I must admit that Brittany is now on my list of places I must visit - it sounds absolutely delightful! I guess I'll have to brush up on my French! I've stayed with friends in eastern England in a house that sounds very like the longhouse in the novel, so the book brought back fond memories of that holiday.
