Mercy Row is a novel set in 1920s and ’30s Philadelphia. It is the story of the rise of a North Philadelphia crime family that was also responsible for building the homes and factories that make up this blue-collar area of the city. Despite the violent trials and tribulations caused by rival gangs from South Philadelphia and Chicago, Jacob Byrne and Franklin Garrett, with the help of the Irish immigrants who settled the Kensington area, build a formidable Irish mob.

This legal and criminal enterprise kept North Philadelphia free from the mafia for two generations. Jacob's and Franklin's organization was built on the blood of those who opposed them, the sweat of the laborers who built North Philly and the tears of the wives and mothers whose loved ones were lost in the struggle.

This is a amazing look at the time in history when the Irish join the mob arena when prohibition is happening. the time when the Irish try to work with the italian families and become a part of their culture.

the Byrne family is great to read about and how they come to power is great to read. the story is a slow build one that has you captured in the historical concepts and how this came about.

the love, loss and blood sweat and tears that these families go through to gain the power and closeness of a family is wonderful to read. This fictional story is soaked in historical accuracy and shows you a side of the rise in the crime family arena that you don’t expect to read.

When we see two families work together and peace come about the world is at their feet and it’s hard not to become captured in all the ups and downs of their lives. The crime wars, the marriages, family meetings, celebrations and sadness. All is felt in this book and seen with a realistic feel.

the writing is realistic in how it brings you into this world and keeps you there.

A great wonderful book on the power of the mob and how families come about and their personal lives.

Mercy Row A Philadelphia Story edition by Harry Hallman Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Taking place during 1920's and 1930's Philadelphia Mercy Row is a story about gangsters, Irish immigrants, the mafia and the family struggles in the mix of all of it. Jacob Byrne and Franklin Garret rise to the top with the Irish mob. Soon enough, a gang war ensues involving the Italian mafia.

You get to see the softer side of these gangsters as they interact with their family and loved ones. I found this book to be reminiscent of The Godfather saga as these men are out on the streets fighting, yet coming home to their families at night.
Jacob finds love in the midst of all the mayhem with a single mother named Molly Simms.

This felt very Godfather-ish to me
"Molly, I know you and Jacob are becoming close and I think it's wonderful," Mrs. Reilly said.
"Thank you Mrs. Reilly. I am very fond of him. Jimmy is also," Molly said.
"And he of you, both of you. I can assure you of that. Molly, you've been around long enough to know that Jacob's business is not just building houses. I want to be sure you know what becoming part of this family means," Mrs. Reilly said.

I have to say, I wanted a bit more out of the 1920's mob, prohibition, Philly setting. That is such a great era to read about. This book was good, but I felt like it could have been so much more. I think the author captured the dialogue very well though. At just 145 pages, this is both a vicious and gritty story, yet there are glimpses of hope within these pages. I liked Jacob, he's a tough, no nonsense guy. The way he and Molly developed feelings did feel a bit rushed for my taste, but then again this is a short read. Their relationship continued on steadily enough throughout the rest of the story.

Overall, Mercy Row is a fast paced, interesting read, and although I would have liked to have seen a bit more descriptive writing as far as the setting goes, I enjoyed it. I actually enjoyed it enough to wish it were longer. I recommend it to fans of mafia stories.

I. Found it very good. It kept my interest.
Interesting and entertaining
The story it self keep me reading all the way till the end, but the whole time I keep asking myself was this really how things were? It just didn't seem real.
Being a Philadelphian, I loved the setting of this story. The characters were fascinating, drawing you quickly into the story. It was so good, I'm starting Book 2 now.
“Mercy Row” is a tough book about tough people. Set in the 1920s and 30s, it’s an action novel that tells the story of the Byrne gang of North Philadelphia and its intense rivalry with the Italian gangs of South Philly. I picked it up and couldn’t put it down. Mr. Hallman’s prose is suited to the topic His style is spare, brutal and direct, yet he evokes the era well and creates characters who are at once ruthless and compassionate, sentimental and gentle in handling their friends, implacably tough when dealing with their enemies. Harry Hallman researched the era well and really nailed it. It’s a good story and a great read. I felt as if I were there.
